Southwest Alaska Halibut Fishing
When most people think about
southwest Alaska, and think about the oceans that are available and the
inlets that surround the peninsula. Although there certainly is a lot of
fishing action that is available inland, the area of southwest Alaska is
home to some of the greatest halibut fishing in the world. As a matter of
fact, the southern end of the Cook Inlet boasts some of the largest
halibut that can be found anywhere, regardless of where you want to fish.
Halibut fishing is going to give you some of the greatest sport fishing
that you can possibly encounter. You are relatively limited as far as the
parts of the world where you can catch this unique fish and Alaska is
going to be one of your best choices for making sure that you have a great
day out on the ocean. In order to catch halibut, however, you're going to
need to charter a boat and have a guide service to help to lead you where
the fish are running. Not only that, they're going to be able to make sure
that you have the best day possible out on the water.
Halibut generally run about 25 to 30 pounds on the average but it is
possible for you to land one that is up to 600 pounds in size. Most of the
trophy halibut that are caught on these charters tend to run about 200 to
300 pounds, depending on the fish you get into. If you have come a long
way in order to do some halibut fishing in Alaska, the last thing that you
want to have happen is for you to lose one of these large fish because you
are unprepared with your gear. That is another reason why charters are a
great idea because they will have the gear that is necessary in case you
happen to run into one of these larger fish.
Most of the charters that you're going to take will be limited as far as
the areas in which they launch. Southwest Alaska fishing, at least where
charter fishing is concerned has to be close to some of the population and
the population tends to be rather sparse in this area of the state. As a
matter of fact, only about 50,000 inhabitants are in the entire southwest
area of Alaska and that is only 1/10 of the population of the entire
state. There are very few roads except those that interconnect some of the
small villages that are close to each other.
If you have come to southwest Alaska in order to fish for some freshwater
fish, make sure that you save a day or two in order to get out on the
ocean and to go after some trophy halibut. It is a unique way to fish and
one of the few opportunities that we have two land a fish of this size.
