Southeast Alaska Salmon Fishing
Of all of the different places
that you could go in the world in order to catch salmon, Alaska is going
to offer you some of the most action that you're going to find anywhere.
This is because many areas of the world are declining as far as a salmon
population is concerned but Alaska still offers some untouched wilderness
and plenty of action if you are fishing for this species. The southeast
area of Alaska offers you the opportunity to catch five different species
of salmon, all in their native habitat.
Salmon fishing in Southeast Alaska is exceptional for a few reasons. First
of all, the area is a Panhandle and the entire western part is on the
Pacific Ocean. There are a lot of different rivers and streams that run
out of British Columbia and through the Panhandle, emptying into the
ocean. The salmon runs that go up the streams in order for the fish to
spawn are nothing short of amazing and give you an excellent opportunity
to catch these fish as they are passing by.
Southeast Alaska also gives you the opportunity to see a lot of
interesting things that don't necessarily have to do with fishing. Even if
your main focus of your vacation is your fishing trip, you should take an
opportunity to do a little bit of sightseeing, as there are some excellent
national parks in the area. Because of the salmon population, there is
also a very large bear population and it is an excellent opportunity for
you to go out on a bear watching excursion.
Although it certainly is possible for you to do your salmon fishing in
some of the more populous areas of Southeast Alaska, one of the best ways
for you to enjoy the sport is to hire a guide service and to fly into a
remote area. Southeast Alaska, as with much of the state has a lot of
wilderness areas that are going to give you the opportunity to fish for
salmon where other humans rarely ever visit. You can generally choose
anywhere from a one day trip to a week or longer in the wilderness in
order to enjoy this fishing.
Fly fishing for salmon is one of the most enjoyable fishing sports that
you're going to find. The lightweight tackle that you use along with the
fact that you are tricking the fish by using an artificial lore is going
to heighten your enjoyment by far. Although a salmon may bite on anything
that you put in front of its face, after a few of them get on the line
they begin to get rather leery. This is an excellent place for you to be
able to test your skill as a fly fisherman and to get one of these
trophies on the end of your line. Since some of the salmon tend to reach
up to 50 pounds or more in weight, you are in for quite a fight whenever
you get one hooked.
