Southcentral Alaska Halibut Fishing
The halibut is one of the staple
food fish for much of the world. They are commonly found in the waters of
the North Atlantic and North Pacific oceans and many people travel from
around the world in order to catch these fish. Being a rather large
species, they tend to eat whatever they want and this includes almost any
fish that is smaller than them. If you find yourself on the proper
charter, you will run into almost nonstop action that this unique fish can
provide.
The south-central Alaska region offers a lot in the way of halibut fishing
that you will not be able to find in any other area in the world. They are
abundant at certain times of the year in such places as The Prince William
sound and The Gulf of Alaska. Although these fish tend to average about 25
or 30 pounds each, it is not uncommon to find them to be several hundred
pounds per fish. Some of the larger fish that are typically caught on
charters tend to run around the 200 to 300 pound range but it is not
uncommon for a halibut to reach up to 600 pounds in size. A fish of that
size would be worth traveling almost anywhere in the world to catch.
Since you will be leaving the mainland in order to fish for halibut, it is
a good idea that you either know the waters well or that you hire a good
guide service in order to get you where the halibut are running.
South-central Alaska halibut fishing is some of the best that you are
going to find in the world but you need to find the fish first. Another
reason why it would be a good idea for you to hire a charter or guide
service to take you halibut fishing is because they are going to have the
gear that you need in case you happen to latch onto one of the larger
fish. After all, the last thing that you would want to do is to travel all
this way for some great fishing and then to lose the big one because you
didn't have the proper gear.
A lot of people that come to south-central Alaska in order to fish don't
simply come just to catch halibut. This is only one of the fish that is
available in the area and many of the halibut charters are going to be
able to guide you to a lot of different fish that are available as well.
You may even like to try a little bit of inland fishing in between being
out on the water when things are rough. Doing a little bit of rainbow
trout fishing or steelhead fishing can certainly help to pass the day
instead of waiting for the seas to calm again.
