Remote Alaska Lake Trout Fishing
The lake trout is a species of freshwater fish that is often referred to
as a lake char as well as a mackinaw. It is a relatively large fish and
some of the largest have been known to reach weights of up to 100 pounds
or more. Since it is dependent on cold, deep lakes in order to survive,
the remote areas of Alaska provide some of the best lake trout fishing
that is available, anywhere in the world. As a matter of fact, some people
will travel quite a distance just to take a fishing vacation in the
interior and far north areas of Alaska to enjoy catching some of these
trophy fish.
Some of the best areas to fish for lake trout includes the Arctic coastal
plain and in lakes that are around the Alaska mountain range. The average
lake trout tends to be around 15 or 20 inches long and weighs about 10
pounds but this can go up quite dramatically and the state record is over
45 pounds which was caught in 1970. Lake trout have a relatively long life
and can be up to 40 years old but it is rare for them to live that long.
There are a variety of different ways which you can fish for lake trout
which include trolling the lakes and ice fishing. The lake trout tends to
strike better on brightly colored lures that are put down deeper into the
water so it is rare that people will use fly fishing techniques in order
to catch this species. Since it can be fished for through the ice, it is
possible for you to catch lake trout almost anytime of the year but you
may want to plan your fishing vacation during some of the warmer months as
the remote areas of Alaska can get dangerously cold in the winter time.
If you plan on coming to the interior territory or northern Alaska in
order to fish for lake trout, do a little bit of planning ahead of time so
that you can hook up with a guide service. They will be able to take you
to the areas in which the lake trout is most plentiful and to make sure
that you have a great time out on the water. There are even some lodges
which are available where you can just take a short walk down to the edge
of the water and begin fishing for lake trout within just a few minutes
after leaving your room.
Although lake trout fishing makes an excellent vacation, make sure that
you fish for some of the other species that are available in this unique
part of the world. You should also take a little bit of time to enjoy the
sights and surroundings as this remote area of Alaska offers some of the
most beautiful scenery that is available in the world. It is certain to be
a vacation that you will not quickly forget.
